Fattoria dei Barbi
Barbi Farm - Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2020 cl75
| Description | Brunello is the “heart” of Fattoria dei Barbi, produced since 1892 and decorated on numerous occasions. Seasonal trend 2019 Winter with temperatures slightly above average; minimum temperatures below zero, concentrated in the first half of January. Rainfall at the end of January and early February, for a total of about 70 mm. Bud burst at the usual times, with precipitation around 100 mm and average temperatures around 10 C° in March, April and May. This seasonal trend led to a vegetative slowdown. In June and July there were no significant rainfall events, with the exception of one phenomenon at the end of July (about 70 mm in two days). Average temperatures in these two months remained between 20 C° and 25 C°, with peaks of 35 C° on only two days. August did not record precipitation, except around the 25th with a total of 20 mm; temperatures were in the usual averages, with maximums between 30 C° and 35 C°. Thanks to the accumulated water reserves and the not excessive temperatures, the foliage remained intact allowing a slow and homogeneous ripening of the grapes, optimal for a perfect phenolic and technological maturity. Rainfall during the first week of September postponed the harvest and allowed a containment of the alcohol content of the grapes. The Sangiovese grapes at harvest were in excellent phytosanitary condition. The grape harvest It started on September 30th and ended on October 10th. Aging potential between 15 and 50 years. |
| Vinification and refinement | The crushed and destemmed grapes underwent a sudden reduction in temperature to 16°C, in a protected CO2 environment. This process of cooling the grape skin allows for greater extraction of the anthocyanin and polyphenol content. Normal alcoholic fermentation lasted for approximately 16/17 days at a controlled temperature of 27°- 28°C. The racking was followed by malolactic fermentation and the wine was subsequently placed in medium-small capacity wood barrels (2.25 hl – 15 hl) followed by the passage into larger capacity barrels. Brunello Annata is aged in small and medium-sized barrels for at least 2 years, followed by a transfer to larger-capacity barrels. Aging: in the bottle for a minimum of 4 months. |
