Description |
The story goes that around 1100 a German bishop commissioned by Emperor Henry V was traveling to Rome; being a passionate connoisseur of wines , he used to send his cupbearer ahead to search for and taste for him the best wines of each place they passed through. They had decided that, if he found good wine, he should write EST (or C'E') on the door of the inn. When he arrived in Montefiascone, the cupbearer was so impressed by the goodness of the local wine that he repeated that word three times, however, reinforcing it with several exclamation points. Est! Est!! Est!!!
