Description |
From the sunniest part of the Tignanello hill. From the best grapes of the best vineyard. The rest is passion, care, attention and research. This is how Solaia is born, produced with the most selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese grapes from the vineyard of the same name. 2017 will be remembered as an unusual vintage in its course. The winter, characterized only in January by a generally cold climate, continued with mild temperatures favoring the early budding of the vine. The sudden drop in temperatures that occurred at the end of April generated a slight drop in production. From May until the end of August, the Chianti Classico area was affected by a generally hot and dry climate, with daily temperatures often above 30 °C. The rainfall in the month of September partially rebalanced the summer stress, allowing the grapes to reach a good ripening. The harvest took place from September 20 to October 6. |

Winemaking and Refinement | Attention was paid to the highest level, both in the vineyard during the harvest and in the cellar, where the grapes were destemmed and the berries, before being delicately pressed, carefully selected on the sorting table and then transferred by gravity into the tanks. It is essential that only perfect berries reach the 60 Hl truncated cone-shaped vinification tanks. During fermentation and maceration, also taking into account the particularity of the vintage, attention to maintaining a correct balance between the fruit and the quality of the tannin, oriented towards sweetness and fragrance, was crucial. Once the skins and wine have been separated, malolactic fermentation begins which, in barriques, enhances the complexity and pleasantness of the wine. The refinement process takes place in new French oak barrels for approximately 18 months. After an initial period of refinement in separate lots, these are assembled to complete the evolution in wood. |
Color |
Solaia 2017 has an intense and deep ruby red color. |
Perfume | The nose is striking for its intense notes of ripe dark fruit, with sensations of blackberry and blackcurrant that alternate with balsamic hints of fresh mint and myrtle; the bouquet is completed by refined spicy aromas of white pepper and toasted cinnamon and cocoa powder. |
Taste |
On the palate it is rich and enveloping; the soft, velvety and vibrant tannins give length to the finish and persistence in the aftertaste, where the toasted notes perceived on the nose return. |
