Description |
Brunello is the “heart” of Fattoria dei Barbi, produced since 1892 and decorated on numerous occasions. Spring 2017 was substantially in line with seasonal averages. The growing season began at the usual times and spring was characterized by a mild and very dry April and May, followed by a temperate and rainless June. However, a very hot summer followed, which actually anticipated the grape ripening processes. The sun was warm throughout the month of July, causing initial water stress for the plants. The most difficult moment was in the second half of August, when an anticyclonic air of African origin began, causing scorching temperatures, well above the average for the period, which continued for two weeks, accelerating the grape ripening times. At the beginning of September, little rain rebalanced the ripening times, allowing for an early but optimal harvest. The harvest took place from 8 to 22 September.
Aging potential between 15 and 50 years.

Vinification and refinement |
The crushed and destemmed grapes underwent a sudden reduction in temperature to 16°C, in a protected CO2 environment. This process of cooling the grape skin allows for greater extraction of the anthocyanin and polyphenol content. Normal alcoholic fermentation lasted for approximately 16/17 days at a controlled temperature of 27°- 28°C. The racking was followed by malolactic fermentation and the wine was subsequently placed in medium-small capacity wood barrels (2.25 hl – 15 hl) followed by the passage into larger capacity barrels.
Brunello Annata is aged in small and medium-sized barrels for at least 2 years, followed by a transfer to larger-capacity barrels. Aging: in the bottle for a minimum of 4 months. |
Sensory analysis |
Color : bright ruby red, luminous, medium intensity. Aroma : red berry, cherry, mint, dog rose. Light nuances of wild fennel and sage. Taste : elegant, smooth with a pleasant spiciness, austere and aristocratic sip with an “old style” finish. Good balance between acidity and tannin. A classic Brunello that takes us back to the productions of the Seventies.
