Description

Col d'Orcia is a traditional producer of Brunello di Montalcino. The choice to continue using Slavonian oak barrels was made many years ago, well before the debate between modernist and traditionalist producers began.
Tradition means respect for the essence of Sangiovese di Montalcino which lies in its aging potential, in the improvement of the wine through long periods in wood and subsequent aging in the bottle.

Poggio al Vento is the Cru produced from the vineyards located at the foot of the century-old oak in the heart of the organic estate of Col d'Orcia. The precious grapes harvested by hand in the 7 hectares of Sangiovese are vinified, only in the best years, for the Riserva Poggio al Vento, one of the historic reserves of Brunello di Montalcino. The large oak barrels as per Montalcino tradition, find a harmonious balance with the centuries-old tradition of the Marone Cinzano family.

The beneficial winter rich in rains has re-established the soil humidity to optimal levels after the dry 2012 season.
Budding and flowering occurred in the typical periods of recent years and the summer climate trend, which did not record extreme values, recalled the “traditional” years of the past.
The harvest began in the second half of September, aided by excellent temperature variations and rain that fell at the right times.

Origin

Montalcino - Siena - Sant'Angelo hill overlooking the Orcia river, Poggio al Vento, altitude 350 m above sea level
Year of planting 1974.

Grapes Particular clones of Sangiovese, locally called Brunello, resulting from a Col d'Orcia massal selection. The choice of harvest time is based on the search for perfect maturity, aimed at producing a long-lived and important wine. Accurate and rigorous selection of bunches right from the vineyard with manual harvesting and further selection on a conveyor belt in the cellar. 2013 harvest yield: 35 q/ha.
Winemaking Fermentation at a controlled temperature of 28° C in 50 and 60 hl steel vats, to be able to select the different areas of the vineyard in an optimal way. During the maceration, lasting 20-25 days, daily pumping over and long délestages are performed. The malolactic was carried out in cement and the first racking was carried out directly in wood in the spring of 2014.
Aging

Aged for 3 years in 25 and 75 hl Allier and Slavonian oak barrels. Bottling was followed by approximately 16 months of bottle ageing in conditioned environments.
