Description

"CastelGiocondo is a unique place in Montalcino, where the great variety of exposures and soils – galestro, clay and Pliocene sands – give this Brunello infinite nuances. A versatility of notes that evolve over time and that make me want to continually discover, savor and remember."
Lamberto Frescobaldi

Iconic Brunello di Montalcino signed by the Frescobaldi family, obtained from pure Sangiovese grapes, carefully hand-selected.

2016 was a demanding, long year, with many stresses, but ultimately one of the best ever. The particularly mild winter led to a slightly earlier budding than usual: the buds could be seen opening already at the end of March; on the other hand, the spring was cool and with several rains, culminating with a very unsummery June with temperatures below the average for the period. A temperate spring therefore, which led to a progressive slowing down of the vegetative phases and consequently a delay in flowering and the subsequent veraison. The hot but not excessively hot summer, with some providential rains in August, meant that the vines faced the last phase of ripening in an excellent physiological state and with perfectly healthy grapes. Then, the last ten days of September, rich in sunshine, temperature variations between day and night, fresh and dry north wind with very low humidity levels, allowed us to complete a punctual, accurate harvest, with fragrant, very ripe, healthy, perfectly balanced grapes.

Grape variety

100% Sangiovese

Winemaking and Refinement The careful care taken in the vineyard, together with the typical characteristics of this unmistakable terroir, have led to a beautiful harvest. The Sangiovese grapes were harvested by hand and once they arrived in the cellar, they were subjected to a scrupulous selection. The fermentations took place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, with frequent pumping over especially during the early stages. The wine was then subjected to aging in wood, where it had the opportunity to mature, refine and balance. CastelGiocondo Brunello is ready for release on the market 5 years after the harvest and only after further refinement in the bottle.

Tasting notes

CastelGiocondo 2016 represents another chapter capable of telling itself magnificently. Its color is an intense and lively ruby red. Its broad bouquet is extremely elegant; the nose is initially pervaded by fruity sensations. The scents of small berries and ripe red fruits accompanied by an elegant floral note predominate. Leaving it open releases spicy hints and a balsamic tip, making it extremely balanced and complex. In the mouth it reveals a dense and elegant tannic texture that, together with its characteristic mineral sensation, envelops the palate and impresses with its harmony. The finish is long, warm and persistent, with the return of sweet and balsamic spicy components.
